"A Realm Beyond the Visual: Contemporary Russian Art at Peter Blake Gallery"

When: 4 ? 6 PM, February 13th, 2005

Alexander Panov will exhibit six painting and a sculpture at Peter Blake Gallery, which has been the definitive source for modern and contemporary art in Orange County since 1993. The painting-objects on view synthesize myriad influences, current and historical, visual and extra-visual, American and European and Russian and perhaps even Asian. Such a multitude of sources bespeaks a hungry, and original mind.

Especially in that Panov?s subject matter is nature and how humanity understands (and misunderstands) it, his now-honed metaphysical outlook results in what can be called a kind of meta-naturalism. Actual things are wrested from the real world and incorporated into the artworks, signifying at once themselves, their kind, and nature ? and culture ? as a whole. The found metal flower hanging on the face of a canvas or a wire, duct tape or a plant embalmed in wax may seem polarities in a nature-culture dialectic. But Panov?s work resolves the dichotomy by reaching synthesis, by presenting all things as ?natural? while claiming them for the ?cultural? realm. The frugal and organic ethos of contemporary environmentalism infuses his art, which recycles materials urgently but unself-consciously. Panov may have learned how to convey such substantiveness in American universities and galleries; but the romanticism of his substantiveness ? this rhapsody of the earth?s trueness ? is nothing if not Russian.

Over the years, Peter Blake gallery and it?s artists have received both regional and national critical acclaim ranging from the Los Angeles Times to Art in America.

Russian Club UCI and Apelsyata are going to have a get together this Saturday. Original idea was to have a beach bonfire, but unfortunately it's going to rain (weather channel) so we'll postpone the beach idea for later. But!

For Saturday Feb 12th, Lets meet at SSL 206 at 7 pm. We'll be there until 11pm.

There we will socialize, drink tea, munch on snacks and play games.

Also, you will be able to buy tickets for the Feb. 19 KVN Game.

Russian school KARANDASH is inviting you, your friends and your kids to our tradition NEW YEAR PERFORMANCE and CELEBRATION! It will be held on 8 January, 2005, Saturday, at 15:00 at our usual place: UCI's Little Theater, Room 601, HH Humanities Hall (E4 on the map)

You will meet again Ded Moroz and Snegurochka, as well as other Russian folk heros: Petrushka, Brave Soldier, Kot-Bayun, Likho Odnoglazoye and many more. Same popular group of parents and volunteers will be performing.

The play will be followed by children?s show, where everybody is welcome to perform (in Russian only please). All children will receive presents from Ded Moroz, little performers will get awards and prizes.

Tickets will be sold at the door. The price for the first child is $15.00, second and all others - $10.00. Adult admission is free, a small donation to cover the costs of costumes will be very much appreciated.

Hello Everyone!

The Russian Club at UCI (RCUCI) has experienced a large number of internal difficulties since leadership was turned over last year. You have probably noticed that club meetings have not been held regularly. Several officers feel that the RCUCI?s performance and reputation is suffering with current leadership and that it is now appropriate to hold re-elections. However, since such event will be the first to happen in the history of RCUCI as it now is, we feel it is important to set precedent for future club members about the best and the most fair way to hold re-elections.

Therefore, we turn to you ? our club members. If you did not know, club membership at RCUCI is not restricted to UCI students. Anyone who wishes to be a member simply needs to attend our club meetings. Although officer positions are restricted to UCI students, every club member has the RIGHT TO VOTE. We propose that our club members will decide whether to hold RE-ELECTIONS or NOT. All votes will be kept confidential.

This Tuesday, November 16, 2004 at 8:00 pm we will hold a debate on WHY or WHY NOT the club should hold re-elections. Club officers will each present their point of view, which will be followed by questions from the audience. At the end of the meeting we will take a vote. The meeting will be held at the Emerald Bay E, at the Student Center. Please, get to the meeting on time. We will prepare for discussions for about 15 minutes and start promptly at 8:15 pm.

If the club approves to have re-elections, they will be held next week, on Tuesday, November 22, 2004. At that point, any club member who is a UCI student, can put himself on the ballot for any of the available positions (2 Co-Presidents, 2 Co-Vice Presidents, Treasurer, Historian and Public Relations).

We are welcoming all participation in the meeting tomorrow, as it affects the future of the club significantly. Please, come listen, ask and VOTE ? LET YOUR OPINION BE HEARD. We will appreciate it greatly.

Beslan Benefit Concert

Please join us for a special concert to raise funds to help the children of Beslan who were injured, orphaned and handicapped as a result of the tragedy.

WHAT HAPPENED IN BESLAN? The Beslan tragedy is the worst terror-related human catastrophe in the history of Russia. There are over 300 victims, mostly children, who already died as a direct result of this terror act. Over 700 victims, also mostly children, have been hospitalized, a large number of them with very serious injuries.

On September 11, 2001, Russian people and the whole world stood by the United States. The Beslan hostage crisis is an example of the same type of terrorism that has perpetrated the September 11th attack.

Now it?s our turn to stand by the people of Beslan, Russia. There is no such thing as ?other people?s children?. Please help us to help them.

Kiev Symphony Orchestra and Chorus

ADMISSION FEE: Admission if free; a free will offering will be taken to support the work of Music Mission Kiev that helps orphans and widows.

KSOC?S PROFILE: With 150+ members, the Kiev Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, is the only private orchestral-choral group in the country of Ukraine; its members also work in state professional orchestras and choirs. Brilliantly conducted by Roger McMurrin, this group of outstanding musicians has premiered many works previously forbidden. An ever-expanding repertoire includes: the ?Requiems? of Brahms, Berlioz, Durufle, Mozart, Verdi and Faure; J.S. Back?s ?B Major Mass?, ?Magnificat?, and ?St. Matthew Passion?; Rachmaninoff?s ?Vespers?; Mendelssonhn?s ?Elijah?; Leonard Bernstein?s ?Chichester Psalms?; and Handel?s ?Messiah?. In 1995 they performed for President Clinton in Kiev during his visit. That same year, 25 KSOC singers went to Bern, Switzerland, to participate in the International Church Music Festival directed by Sir David Willcocks. In 1996 they toured the United States for the first time, giving 27 concerts for over 30,000 Americans. In 1998 they appeared at Cincinnati Music Hall, Severance Hall (Cleveland), Jacoby Hall (Jacksonville), and Carnegie Hall (NYC), and in Durham, giving a sold-out concert in Duke Chapel. The KSOC performs a regular series of concerts annually in Kiev and appears on television and radio programs broadcast to the entire country. For the next couple of weeks the KSOC is returning to Southern California ? don?t miss this concert given at the Coast Bible Church on October 5th, 2004. A free will offering will be taken and all proceeds benefit the KSOC and the work of Music Mission Kiev that helps orphans and widows.

Hello Everyone!!!

UCI Russian Club invites everyone to the rematch soccer game Los Angeles vs Orange County. Spectators are welcomed. It will be a very exciting and intriguing event, which we highly recommend to attend!!!

When:
Saturday 11th September. Game starts at 4:30 pm. Both teams are invited to come an hour earlier for the warm up.

Where:
UC Irvine Anteaters Recreation Center (ARC), soccer fields. If you face main entrance to the gym, soccer fields should be at your left. Address:

Directions from Los Angeles:
Take 405 South, Merge onto 73 South (it says it is a toll road, but you will exit before paying, so don?t worry) Exit Bison Ave. Turn left onto Bison. Turn right onto East Peltason Dr. Turn right onto Campus Dr. Turn right onto California St. The GYM will be at the end of the California St at your left.

Costs:
Non-UCI students pay 5$ fee for using ARC and 3$ for the referees. UCI students pay $3 for referees. Spectators come in for free.

Parking:
You can park at the GYM parking lot. It is 50 cents per hour, if you buy permit at the yellow box located at the parking lot. Don?t park at the meters, it is 1$ an hour, for some reason.

Game format:
3 referees: 1 field ref, 2 offsite refs. Unlimited substitutions, 2 periods 35 minutes each, 15 minute break in between. There will be eight players on each team at the field during the game (1 goalkeeper, 7 field players). Teh field will be just like last time 80 by 45 meeters. Players bring Ids, be ready to sign weavers saying you will not violate UCI rules, just like the last time. At the end of the game all players will be able to take showers at the GYM next to the fields.

After The Game:
We invite everyone to come to the Margarita?s Ville Bar-Restaurant. It is located in Newport Beach, about 15 minutes away from the fields. They will serve Mexican food. There will be a reggae band playing, called Blue VooDoo, from 9pm till 1 or so. The place agreed to give us discount on beer, they will take off $1.5-$2.0 off each pitcher. It is 18 and over to come in, 21 to drink. If someone is under 18, let us know we will arrange it with the Bar. The place has free paring behind the building, and a valet parking, which I think is not necessary.

Volleyball And BBQ

Everyone is invited to this exciting event, the Volleyball game in NewPort. We will have a tournament, at the beach, followed by a bong fire and BBQ. There will be sodas, juices, BBQ, hot dogs, and ice cream, by the fire.

When:
The Volleyball game will take place on Saturday the 28th. Try to get here between 3 and 4 PM, as the game will start at 4 pm (of-course we will wait if we have too), so you'll have an hour or so to warm up.

Where:
Start on 405 South
Exit on 55 West/South
Continiue on Old Newport Blvd.
Make a left on Balboa Street.
Park between D street and F street usually there is parking in that region.
Walk down the F street, you will see us at the beach.

Cost:
Free for Los Angeles people, $5 for OC locals!!!

Game Format:
The game format is 15 points, you can only score while your team is serving, and there is clockwise rotation. I'll also make a score sheet. If we have three teams playing, they'll play against each other twice. If we have four teams, they'll play each other once, for a total of 6 games in both cases. A game lasts 15 mins on average. There will also be the famous guys vs girls game, following the tournament. Again depending on how many teams we get we will modify the tournament to make it fun and fair.

Attire:
Guys wear Speedos you know the usual, haha. Girls no skirts or pants, tops are allowed, the clothes has to be comfortable and light, so it will let you move freely, you won't get dehydrated, and it wouldn't interfere with the game. Look pretty, since I suspect paparzi Gena is planning an intense picture taking session during the game.

Soccer Game Saturday

So evreyone is invited to this exciting event. Soccer Team From Orange County going to play aggainst Soccer Team From Los Angeles. At the end of the game everyone is invited to have BBQ at the beach, And sit by the fire, not far from the field.

Cost:
We would ask every spectator to donate $5 to help us offset the cost of BBQ. Every UCI player $5. Every non-UCI player $10, because of extra $5 fee for the field.

Where and how to get:
UCI ARC recreation center. If you going from Los Angeles. Take 405 South. Switch to 73 south (its a toll road, but you won't pay, you will exit before pay section) Exit Bison Ave. Turn left onto Bison. Turn right onto East Peltason Drive. Turn right onto Campus Drive. Tern Right onto California Ave. You will see the Recreation Center (ARC) on the left at the end of California Ave. Ask people for soccer fields you will find us there. If you ar facing the entrance to the GYM soccer fields are to the left of the GYM. You will find it. I recomend you guys go to www.uci.edu, get the adress and printo out a map just in case.

When:
I will personally get there at 4 to get all the accessories and meet with refs. I will be on the field probably since 4 pm. You welcom to come at 4:30 and start practicing for the game. The game will start at 5:30pm This Saturday.

Game Format:
2 periods by 35 minutes, with a 20 minutes break. We have one field referee and one referiee to watch ofsites. I am still decidint on the goal size, either standard, or smaller ones. Unlimited substitutions. Each team will have 7 field players and a goalkeeper during the game. So it is 8 on 8 game. BRING ID CARDS
You don't have to have cleets or guards. We will have collored tops. I am not sure what colors are they.

After the game:
All the players will be able to use the Gym to take showers after the game. Then one of our locals will guide you to the beach, where we will set up fire and start BBQ. Please don't drink at the beach in this area police is very strict, but you welcome to drink at any bars which are on the way or in your cars, haha you can figure it out. We plan to start BBQ at around 8, but we will see how it goes. UCI Russian Club will provide BBQ, salads soda, but no alcohol.

Ok I think this is all I got to say, I am sure i forgot something. So we are waiting for LA team and LA spectators to come, i serriously can't wait. It will be good times!!! LA team you guys are the best for making this happen, for getting the team together, and willing to come to UCI. Thank you very much for your effort!!!!!

Why: The Russian 150 class will be transforming our classroom into a supernatural wonder straight from the pages of the Novel. Come and see the characters of the novel, taste some of the devil?s favorite food and experience first hand some of the wildest aspects of the novel: cream that can turn you into a witch, skulls filled with emeralds and more.

Master and Margarita tells of Satan's visit to Soviet Moscow under the guise of a magician named Professor Woland. Along with his retinue of lesser demons, Woland plays tricks on various unsuspecting Soviet citizens and arrogant, incompetent Soviet officials. Bulgakov wrote the novel in the late 1930s, under what was arguably the most repressive government ever on earth--the Soviet Union at the height of Stalin's power. When even the mildest criticism of the regime led to a death sentence, Bulgakov dared to place all the cruelty, venality and treachery of 1930s Russia under a microscope.

Initially conceived to liven up the social life on campus, this medieval student festival displays a wide variety of UCI organizations to the campus and surrounding community. Different student, faculty, and staff organizations operate a wide assortment of booths offering multi-cultural foods, games, displays, and crafts. Also located throughout Aldrich Park are stages scheduled with live entertainment, various carnival & inflatable rides, petting zoo, pony rides, snake handling, and wild animal show. There is always something happening as you stroll through the park visiting the vast array of student organization booths."

West Coast premiere! Russia?s legendary writer, director, and actor Mikhail Kozakov and beloved Russian jazz musician Igor Butman perform a show based on the work of the late Joseph Brodsky. Celebrated as the greatest Russian poet of his generation, Brodsky was a jazz fan and employed many musical techniques in his writing. In this work, Kozakov and Butman remember Brodsky and twentieth-century Russia, where writing a poem or playing jazz could be an act of courage. In its North American premiere, Imitations of the Koran synthesizes drama, music, dance, clowning, chorale, poetry, and video, bringing together Pushkin?s version of the ?Prophet? and suras (chapters) from the Koran. The performance comprises stories and meditations about life, love, temptation, sin, and death, featuring intense dialogues between a young prophet Muhammad and Allah. Through this melding of both cherished (Pushkin) and holy (Koran) texts, this astonishing piece provides a theatrical inroad to understanding Muhammad, his spiritual journey, and ultimately Islam, one of the world?s greatest spiritual traditions.


The work was created in September 2001 by the Tashkent-based theater company Ilkhom Theatre. The city of Tashkent is home to one of five original copies of the Koran, but few there can actually read any language other than Russian. In a frenzy of Uzbek nationalism, much of the canon of Soviet and Russian literature was abandoned when Uzbekistan gained independence from the Soviet Union. Pushkin, however, was considered to be above it all. By using Pushkin?s poem cycle instead of the holy book, Ilkhom Theatre has been able to imitate and treat the inimitable and untreatable; as Jewish director Mark Weil says, ?We naively want Pushkin, who was above religion and politics, to reconcile us.?


Founded in 1976 by Artistic Director Mark Weil and still under his direction, this fiercely independent ensemble company was the first in the former Soviet Union not supported by public funds. Its highly skilled actors reflect the diversity of Tashkent and include Russian speakers, Uzbeks, Uigurs, and Koreans.

The game will take place in Emerald Bay, which can fit over 200 players playing a max of 64 games simultaneously. Starting in first round, 1 to 2 people will go on to the second round. In 2nd round and thereafter, 1 from each table will keep going until the final 4 will end up in the finals. There will be a max of 4 rounds. Each round will take approximately 1 hour followed by a 15 minute break. There will also be a half hour to an hour lunch break which will consist of ordered food from InNOut.

For those that do not know how to play, we will be conducting Durak lessons before the actual game. In the lessons you will learn enough skills and strategy to become a fairly good player. Here is a tentative schedule for the event:

Please note this may seem like a long day but only the very hard core players will last through all 4 rounds. Only about one-half to one-fourth will go on to round 2, only about a one-third to one-fourth will go to the semifinals, and only 4 people will make it to the final round. Those that will lose will have the option of either playing more for fun or watch as the game unfolds into hard core competition.

In addition, since the game is during the day everyone has plenty of time to get ready for a Saturday evening whether its an evening with family or friends or a late night party on the boat.

Since there are multiple variations to the game, the game will be Podkidnoy and will follow the rules very similar to www.pagat.com/beating/durak.html. More detailed instructions will be explained during the game.
